No jargon, no shouting from the beach. Your coach is in the water with you, choosing waves and giving you the push at the right moment.
In 2014, Ines Carvalho and Tom Reyes parked a borrowed van at Foz do Lizandro and started teaching friends of friends. Twelve seasons later, Saltline is a crew of six coaches, a small surf house up the hill and a rack of boards we repair ourselves every winter.
What has not changed: tiny groups, honest advice on conditions and the belief that the best surf lesson is the one where you leave smiling, whether you stood up or not.
"We would rather cancel a lesson than put a beginner in the wrong waves. The ocean will be here tomorrow."Ines Carvalho, co-founder and head coach
All coaches hold lifeguard and first-aid certificates and speak English, Portuguese and at least one more language.
Grew up two streets from the beach. Speaks PT, EN, FR.

"I was terrified of the ocean. Ines held my board, counted my waves and by the third day I rode one all the way to the sand. I cried a little. Best holiday of my life."
"The video analysis was a game changer. Rui showed me I was looking at my feet on every wave. Fixed it the same afternoon."
"Booked the kids lesson for our 9 and 12 year olds. Maya was brilliant with them, and we rented boards next door for ourselves. Super organised."

You should be comfortable in water and able to swim about 50 metres. Beginner lessons happen in waist-deep water and you are always attached to a big, floaty board.
We check the forecast every evening and move the lesson to a more sheltered beach if needed. If no spot is safe, we reschedule or give you a full refund.
Swimwear to wear under the wetsuit, a towel, sunscreen and a water bottle. We provide board, wetsuit, lockers and showers.
Group lessons start at 8 years old. Private lessons are possible from 6 with a parent nearby. There is no maximum age; our oldest first-timer was 71.
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before your lesson. Later cancellations can be moved to another day within the same season.
